The Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh was established in the year 1975, and this happened under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 in the bio-geographical province of Indus-Ganges Monsoon Forest. The entire area of the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh is 551.55 square kilometers, and the region is mainly hilly. The altitude of the Madhya Pradesh Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary ranges from 200 meters to 1000 meters above sea level. The vegetation of this region is mainly the tropical sal forests. At the higher altitudes other species of vegetation are also found.

Flora and Fauna - Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary in India is the proud owner of a rich fauna. The Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary has numerous species of wild animals like the Chital, Wild Bear, Leopard, Tiger Panthera, striped Hyaena, Canis aureus jackal, sloth bear Melursus ursinus, Indian wild dog Cuon alpinus, Chital Axis axis, four-horned antelope or Tetracerus quadricornis, nilgai Boselaphus tragocamelus, Chinkara, Blackbuck, Wild Boar and many more.

Major Wildlife Attractions - The sanctuary is famous to have some of the most rare fauna in the region. These include; various species of animals such as tigers, leopards, gaur, cheetah, mouse and various species of birds. Along with this, visitor can find plant species such as Sal forest, Bamboo brakes, mixed deciduous forest and sub-lands and tropical forest. Apart from this various other species residing in the sanctuary include;, Chinkara, Cobra, Jungle Cat, Lesser Kestrels, Antelopes, Barking Deer, Chinkara, Monkey, Muntjac and Porcupineetc.

Best Time to Visit - The period from November to June is ideal to visit the Sanctuary.

How to Get there

Air: Nearest airport to the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is Raipur at a distance of 172 kms.

Rail: Bilaspur is the nearest railway station located just 35 kilometers away.

Climate in the Sanctuary is tropical and remains pleasant with the summer being a bit hot.
