Surrounded by Deodar and Oak forests, Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Solan valley of Himachal Pradesh. Established in the year 1976, the sanctuary is spread over a sprawling area of 10,854.36 hectares, barking deer and kalijin being the major attractions of the sanctuary.

The Chail wildlife Sanctuary comprises of mammals mainly which includes rhesus macaque, leopard, Indian Muntjac (Barking Deer) and goral crested porcupine. Other animals found at Chail sanctuary in Himachal are Himalayan black bear, wild boar, common langur, sambar etc. There are trekking provisions in this wildlife sanctuary of Himachal Pradesh to make the trip more adventurous and interesting. Chir Pheasant breeding farm is another tourist attraction of the Chail Sanctuary.

It is also home to rare orchids and several endangered species of wildlife. People visiting this place must also come to the Chir Pheasant Breeding and Rehabilitation Center, which was set up in 1988 at Bossom and Jhajja.

Among them, one may capture the glimpse of the Common Langur, Leopard, Indian Porcupine, Sambar, Goral, Common Giant, Kashmiri Flying Squirrel, Pheasants, Rhesus Macaque, Himalayan Black Bear, Red Deer, Indian Hare, Yellow Throated Marten, Silver-White Oak and Barking Deer.

Trekking
The best way to enjoy a wildlife tour at Chail Sanctuary can be trekking. The rough topography does not allow taking a jeep safari in the park. For those who want to see this park while enjoying adventure sport like trekking, this park has quite a few high-altitude trekking routes. The trek routes are the Kandaghat-Chail, Chail-Rajgarh and Chur Chandini and Chail-Shimla via Junga.

Angling
Adventure seekers can enjoy angling here in the Gaura River. This river is full of Mahseer fish.

Birding
This sanctuary encourages birding. There are areas where you can just stroll around and view some of the rarest species of Birds. One of the main attractions of this sanctuary is Chir Pheasant breeding farm. The Chir Pheasant breeding and rehabilitation programme has been started in 1988.

Best Time to Visit - The best time to visit Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is from March to October.

How to get there

Air: Shimla is the nearest airport.

Rail: You can reach this beautiful place on Kalka-Shimla track is by the toy train. It takes five hours from Kalka. The toy train with a maximum of half 5-6 bogies will take you through the most thickly forested tracks, breathtaking bends, deep ravines and never-ending tunnels.

Road: Accessibility to this Wildlife Sanctuary is possible via Kalka-Shimla route. About 40 kms from Shimla, the sanctuary is well-connected by road to all the nearby places.
