A real ocean of green paradise on earth. A rugged mountains belt its panoramic landscape is beyond descriptions. It is a land of wonder for tourist and living treasure for scientists i.e. Ornithologists, Zoologists, Botanists, Ecologists. Indeed, a virgin natural forest with unique natural lakes in the midst of wilderness.  

The Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is well scattered over a pulsating plot of land that measures approximately 281 square kilometers. Being situated at a close proximity from the venue of Roing, the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is comfortably accessible from any distant nook of the state. Since, the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh is cradled in the bottom half of the absolutely delectable Dibang Valley District, the primary tribes that inhabit this section of the landscape are the Idu Mishims and Adis.

The common species of the mammals, birds and insects which were recorded in the sanctuary are stated below:

MAMMALS:
Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Leopard Cat, Jungle Cat, Fishing Cat, Spotted Linsang, Common Mongoose, Wild Dog, Jackel, Yellow bellied Weasel, Burmes Ferret Badger, Malay Treeshrew, Common Otter, Indian Porcupine, Himalayan Black Bear,Assamese Macaque, Stumptail Macaque, Slow Loris, Hoolock, India Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Barking Deer, and the high mountains mammals of following species are recorded: Red Pand, Musk Deer, Mishmi Takin, Serow, Goral, Snow Leopard etc..

BIRDS:
Goosander, Large Cormorant, Mallard, Godwall, Cotton Teal, Three Toed Forest Kingfisher, Himalayan Pied Kingfisher,  Blue Throated Barbet, Temmink’s Tragopen, Monal Pheasant, Japanese Awfinch, Whitnaped Yuhina, Silvereared Mesia, Large Niltava, White Throated Red Start, Spotted Short Tailed Wrenbabbler, Alpine Choug, White Spotted Laughing Thrust, Blue Wing Laughing Thrust, Red Headed Laughing Thrust, Great Pied Hornbill, Tibeten Greybacked Shrike, Green Magpie, Large Racket-tailed Drongo, Wren, Black Napped Oriole, Longtailed Broadbill, Blue Napped Pitta etc..

SNAKES:
Varieties of snake species, both poisonous and non-poisonous are found in this sanctuary.

Among the poisonous snakes the following deserve special mention:
Black Krait, Banded Kraft, Cobra Naja Naja, King Cobra, Pit Viper etc..

Among the non-poisonous snakes are the following:  

Python, Reticulate Python, The Whip Snake, Common Indian Black Snake, Checkeved Keel Back, Himalayan Cat Snake, Green Whip Snake, Stripedracer etc..

FISH:
Garra Annandalei, Garra Gotyla Gotyla, Garra Lamta, Aborichthys Elongates, Botia Dayi, Cyprinion Semiplotum etc.  

The best time to visit the wildlife is between the months of October to April.

How to Get there

Road: Roing is the gate way to Upper Dibang valley and well connected to Tinsukia and Dibrugarh by regular bus and taxi services.

Rail: Tinsukia is the nearest railway station.

Air: Pawan Hans Helicopter Service connects Roing to Itanagar. The nearest Airport is Dibrugarh which has regular flight connection to New Delhi and Kolkata by Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airways.
