About Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary   Cranes

Nal Sarovar is a natural lake, spread across a sprawling area of over 116 sq. km. The place is located about 70km from Ahmedabad and is famous for housing vivid migrating birds. A large number migratory birds from Siberia visit this place every year.

Flocks of flamingos, a great variety of ducks, geese and pelican are some of the major attractions of the place. This water bird sanctuary is like a fairyland for birds here and looks picturesque during full moon nights.

A large number of islets also dot this region. Most prominent among these islets houses ancient idol of goddess Hinglaj and Bhurekha. Villagers from adjoining places come here annually to offer prayer to the goddess. Bird viewing can be enslaving experience here.


 
Fauna in Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary    

The fauna of the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary also includes a few mammalian species. It is rather unfortunate that their number is steadily on the decline. It is all the more for this reason that one should not miss out on the opportunity of seeing the endangered species like the wild ass and the black buck.

Major Wildlife Attractions - Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary  

Here you will see kingfishers, egrets, darters, storks and cormorants spear or catch fish with their dagger shaped beaks. You will also get to see jacanas, moorehens, coots, grebes and ducks feeding mainly on plants, straining water from their specially designed beaks and keeping the food in. You will see the flamingos using their long necks and legs to probe the waters and snipes and godwits probing into mud for food with their long bills.

Visitors are ferried in small boats to experience a sunrise or sunset while gliding gently through the silent waters. Country boats of the local people are available for birdwatching on the lake.

The best time to visit the park is during winters and spring seasons, as this is the perfect time, when you get to see plentiful migratory birds.
