Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary fascinates ornithologists from all across the world who look for multiplicity of flora and fauna in India. Situated amidst wide range of biodiversities, the Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary is considered a major spot for those interested in wildlife photography and adventure. Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary is situated at a distance of about 60 kilometers from the Kurnool area near Nandikotkuru in Andhra Pradesh, India. This popular bird sanctuary covers an area of about 614 sq kms and its vegetation include dry thorn type of forest, interspread with dry cereal crops, cotton, groundnut and castor. The Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary provides opportunities to its visitors to observe the diverse wild plants and animal species in their natural habitat.

Flora and Fauna in Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary

Flora:
People living in the adjoining 16 islands and 30 villages are directly or indirectly dependent on the lake for their livelihood. It supports a rich bio-diversity. It is surrounded by southern tropical dry evergreen forest with species like Manilkara Hexandra, Albizzia Amara, Strychnos Muxvomica, Ficus Tiela, Dryopteris Sepiata, Pteriospermus, Uberifolium, Glaucum etc and mangrove forest with species like Ezcocaria, Agollocha, Auicenia Officinales, Acanthies Ilicifolius, Rhizophora Apiculata, Xylocarpus Moluecenix, Degiceros Conrniculatum.

Fauna:
The most important bird species of this lake is Flamingo.. Other birds found here are Pelicans, Painted Storks, Open Billed Storks, Grey Herons, Cormorants, White Ibis, Spoon Bills, Egrets, Reef Herons, Spot Billed Ducks, Shovellers, Pintails, Sand Pipers, Gills, and River Tern etc.

Invertebrates like Prawn, Plankton and Mollusks and fishes of about 65 different species like Sable Fish, Sargin Fish, White, Black and Silver Promphets etc. can also be seen here. One can find reptiles like Monitor Lizard, lizards, snakes including poisionous ones like the spectacled cobra, Russel's Viper, and Krait etc.

Endowed with a rich wildlife, the Rollapadu Bird sanctuary is the homeland of Black Buck, Bonnet Macaque, Indian Bustard, Indian Roller, Sparrows, Mynas, Russell’s Viper, Indian Cobra, Jackal, Wolf, Indian Fox, Indian Bustards, Lesser Florican, White eye Buzzards, Bar Headed Goose, Short Toed Snake Eagles, Painted & Grey Francolins, Rain Rock Bush and Jungle Bush Quails, Demoiselle Crane, Yellow Wattled Lapwing, Indian Courser, Chest Nut Bellied Sandgrouse, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Alpine Swift, Indian Bush Larks, Rufous Tailed Lark, Ashy Crowned Sparrow Lark, Southern Grey and Bay backed Shrikes, Rosy starlings, yellow eyed, common, large grey and yellow billed Babblers, Grey breasted, Plain and Ashy Prinias, Blyth's and Twany Pipits, White browed Wagtails, Grey necked and Red Headed Buntings, White and Black Storks, Pied Harriers, to name only a few.

Best Time to Visit - Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary

The period between October to February is considered the best time to visit the Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary.

How to Get there

Rail: Kurnool is the nearest railway station to reach the Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary.

Road: Rollapadu Bird Sanctuary is well connected by buses from Kurnool and Nandikotkuru.
